Toll in Hungary
Why do you have to pay toll charges?
Most countries in Europe charge tolls. There is what is known as a toll obligation. But what does that mean? Toll amounts are charged for the use of certain routes, tunnels, and bridges. The funds raised through tolls are invested in the road network, enabling you to enjoy a smooth journey. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll bridges
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll collected?
The toll can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll, and special toll routes.
Vignette requirement: cars (with trailer) up to 3.5 t GVW & motorhomes
Under the vignette requirement, toll charges are levied that are not calculated based on kilometres but correspond to a flat rate that varies depending on the duration of travel. Accordingly, you purchase a digital vignette before your trip and choose between the various validity periods. Depending on the vehicle class, the price of a vignette may vary. By purchasing the vignette, you make a one-time purchase that allows you to use all toll roads. The vignette requirement applies in Hungary to cars (with trailer) up to 3.5 t GVW as well as to motorhomes regardless of weight, whereby vehicle class D2 applies to motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW. The vignette in Hungary is called the E-Matrica, and you can purchase the digital vignette for Hungary from us before your trip.
Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle is charged a different toll amount. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are charged a higher toll than cars with fewer than 7 seats. You can find more information on the various vehicle classes in our guide.
Distance-based toll: trucks and cars with trailer over 3.5 t GVW
The distance-based toll applies in Hungary to vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Unlike the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll is not a flat rate, but rather varies based on the road category, route length (number of kilometres), vehicle category (weight class and number of axles), and CO2 emission class. Accordingly, the amount of the toll charge can vary greatly. The distance-based toll is collected with the help of a transponder (transmitter device).
Vehicles over 3.5 t GVW can pay the distance-based toll using various methods.
Purchase of a single-route ticket: Only available online and valid for only 120 minutes from the time of purchase. This option is recommended if you only use the roads occasionally.
HU-GO system with transmitter device: For this option, you must register in the HU-GO system and deposit a credit balance using a transmitter device (OBU). The HU-GO system is particularly suitable for frequent drivers, i.e. people who use the routes more often.
Special toll: Does not exist in Hungary!
