Border Crossings Romania Serbia
The Romanian-Serbian border is approximately 476 kilometers long. It runs along the west of Romania and the east of Serbia. It also follows rivers such as the well-known Danube.
Border Controls
Between Romania and Serbia, border controls take place. This procedure is necessary, among other things, due to the refugee situation. Therefore, you must carry and present your passport. In addition, depending on nationality and purpose of travel, a visa may be required.
Therefore, plan for additional time at the border crossings, as significant waiting times can regularly occur when entering and exiting the country.
Border Crossings Between Romania and Serbia
Between Romania and Serbia, there are numerous border crossings that are important for road traffic. The following border crossings concern international road and travel traffic. However, in addition to these four border crossings, there are other crossing options that are more relevant for local traffic.
Becicherecu Mic (Romania) – Vatin (Serbia): This border crossing is located in the west of Romania and at the same time in the east of Serbia.
Moldova Nouă (Romania) – Novi Kneževac (Serbia): This border crossing is located in the southwest of Romania and in the northeast of Serbia.
Jimbolia (Romania) – Kikinda (Serbia): This border crossing is located in the northwestern part of both countries.
Naidăș (Romania) – Kladovo (Serbia): This border crossing is located in the southwestern part of Romania and Serbia.
Romania
The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.
Romania: Vignette Requirement (or Not?)
In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called "Rovinieta", which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (combinations) do not require their own vignette, and motorhomes must have a car vignette regardless of their weight.
It is common for the electronic vignette to record the vehicle data and the validity period of the vignette in a database, so the consumer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept safe.
Depending on the vehicle class, you must choose a different vignette, and different prices apply. Further information on the digital vignette can be found here.
Distance-Based Toll
In Romania, there is no distance-based toll, but you need a digital vignette and must take additional fees into account when crossing the Danube.
Danube Crossing: Bridge Toll (Special Toll)
Please note that additional fees apply when crossing the Danube. This river flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria) from each other. If you wish to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees will apply.
Serbia
The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.
Vignette Requirement (or Not?)
In Serbia, there is no vignette requirement, but there is a distance-based toll.
Distance-Based Toll
The distance-based toll is based on the distance traveled, which can be settled at toll stations or with the help of electronic systems.
Cars: depending on the height of the front axle (up to/from 1.3 m) or overall height (up to/from 1.9 m)
Combinations: depending on the height of the front axle (up to/from 1.3 m) or overall height (up to/from 1.9 m) as well as the number of axles
Motorhomes: depending on the height of the front axle (up to/from 1.3 m), overall height (up to/from 1.9 m), total weight (up to/from 3.5 t gross vehicle weight) as well as the number of axles
Payment can be made at the toll stations by taking a ticket when you exit the highway. Depending on the route and vehicle or vehicle class, the amount of toll to be paid will be higher.
At the toll stations, you can pay with cash as well as with credit card or debit card. In addition, it is possible to settle your distance-based toll in euros, but you should note that you will receive your change in the Serbian currency (dinar).
