Since 2020, Slovakia has used a digital vignette system for motorways and expressways to finance road maintenance, operation, and infrastructure development.
Most motorways and expressways in Slovakia require a valid vignette. Toll-free sections are marked with “BEZ ÚHRADY”. The former sticker vignette has been completely replaced by the electronic version.
The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW. Motorcycles are exempt. Motorhomes require a vignette regardless of their weight.
For vehicle combinations (car + trailer): if the total weight is under 3.5 t GVW, one vignette is sufficient. If it exceeds 3.5 t, an additional vignette for the trailer is required.
Vehicles over 3.5 t GVW (except motorhomes) are subject to distance-based tolling instead of the vignette. Charges depend on distance, number of axles, and emission class.
The toll is collected via an on-board unit (transponder) and applies to motorways, expressways, and selected first- and second-class roads.
Driving without a valid vignette may result in fines ranging from €100 to €500. Enforcement is carried out via automatic license plate recognition and mobile inspections.
