On the most important north-south route between Germany and Italy, the Gotthard Road Tunnel in Switzerland will be closed on twelve nights in June 2026.
During the closure periods, car traffic will be diverted via the Gotthard Pass road. Lorries, on the other hand, will have to wait in front of the tunnel. The closures apply from 20:00 to 05:00 and affect the motorway A2 between Göschenen and Airolo. The reason for the closures is scheduled maintenance work.
The tunnel will be closed on the following nights:
The closure takes place from Monday evening to Friday morning each time.
These regulations apply to travellers who are using alternative routes through Switzerland during the closures and should also familiarise themselves with the applicable toll regulations. The use of Swiss motorways is not governed by a distance-based car toll, but by the vignette requirement or the heavy vehicle charge. Detailed information on tolls in Switzerland can be found in our guide.
A valid Swiss annual vignette is required to use the motorways. You can purchase this digital vignette conveniently and online from us. As a general rule, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW (gross vehicle weight) require a vignette. Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t GVW are, however, required to pay a heavy vehicle charge. In Switzerland, only an annual vignette is currently available. Accordingly, no other validity periods are offered.
For motor vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t GVW, the heavy vehicle charge applies: either the Flat-rate Heavy Vehicle Charge (PSVA) or the Distance-related Heavy Vehicle Charge (LSVA). This charge must be paid at customs upon entry or in advance online via the Via portal.
In addition to the vignette requirement and the heavy vehicle charge, Switzerland also has special toll routes. These are primarily tunnels and Alpine pass roads, whose construction and maintenance are particularly costly due to the challenging Alpine conditions. An additional fee is charged for the use of these routes. The special toll must be paid independently of the vignette, meaning that vehicle owners require a separate ticket or pass even with a valid annual vignette.
Another special feature of the Swiss transport network is car trains. They enable vehicles to be transported through mountain regions and tunnel sections that would otherwise only be accessible via longer detours. A separate ticket is required to use a car train. Especially during heavy traffic or difficult weather conditions, car trains are a practical alternative for many travellers.
