The Swiss Gotthard Tunnel on the A2 motorway towards Chiasso is one of the most important connections to Italy. In order for the tunnel to be cleaned and maintained, it must be closed for 36 non-consecutive nights.

The following dates are scheduled for the closure:

  • 15.09.2025 - 19.09.2025 from 8:00 pm - 5:00 am (Monday - Friday)

  • 29.09.2025 - 03.10.2025 from 8:00 pm - 5:00 am (Monday - Friday)

  • 06.10.2025 - 08.10.2025 from 8:00 pm - 5:00 am (Monday - Wednesday)

The closures due to cleaning and maintenance work take place in the months of March, April, June, September, and October 2025. In addition, the tunnel is closed once a week for regular traffic. This is usually from Wednesday to Thursday between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am.

How can you bypass the tunnel during the closed times?

The well-known Brenner route is not an option this year, as there is bridge work taking place there that will cause significant traffic congestion. We therefore recommend planning your trip so that you drive through the Gotthard Tunnel during the open times.

Alternative routes are:

  • the San Bernardino route (A13 Chur-Bellinzona) - especially for longer-term closures

  • Also the Simplon Pass - You can use this route if there is also congestion on the other alternative routes.

What should you do as a camper if you find yourself in front of the closed tunnel?

If you should accidentally find yourself in front of the closed tunnel, as a camper you can spend a night at the nearby motorhome pitch Gotthard Camping in Andermatt.
