Renovation of the A9

The A9 Pyhrnautobahn is one of the busiest sections of the highway in Styria, located north of Graz. It is used daily by up to 50,000 vehicles. As a result, the planned renovation works could significantly affect traffic. However, the work on the A9 is necessary.

The renovations are taking place between the two Gratkorn tunnels and extend north to the junction at Deutschfeistritz. The 8-kilometer section will not only see the renewal of the roadway and the associated ten bridges, but also an expansion of the noise and environmental protection measures. The noise protection will be extended by 500 meters. Additionally, eight water protection systems will be constructed to support environmental protection efforts. The entire renovation work is planned to be carried out in two phases. By the end of this year (December 2025), the work between the two Gratkorn tunnels will be completed, although the tunnels themselves are not affected. In the following year (2026), construction will begin on the section leading to the Deutschfeistritz junction.

The first phase began this week (March 17, 2025) with the implementation of the first of seven traffic management phases. These phases are designed to maintain a steady flow of traffic, ensuring that two lanes per direction remain open despite the ongoing renovation work. Due to these new traffic management systems, other speed limits are in place. As a safety measure, the speed limit is set at a maximum of 80 km/h.
