Toll in Croatia

Last updated: 02.07.2026

What is a toll (requirement)?

Most European countries charge toll fees. These fees apply to the use of motorways, express roads, tunnels and bridges. The generated revenue is invested in road infrastructure and traffic safety.

  • Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways

  • Traffic safety and management: intelligent traffic systems

  • Environmental protection: measures to reduce noise and emissions

How is the toll collected?

Tolls may be charged via vignettes, distance-based systems or as special tolls.

In Croatia, there is no vignette system. Instead, a distance-based toll applies on motorways, depending on the vehicle class and distance travelled.

Situation from autumn 2026

From autumn 2026, a digital toll system with license plate recognition and toll boxes (similar to ETC) is planned to replace the existing toll booths.

Special regulations

Vehicles over 1.9 m in height are subject to higher tolls. Roof boxes or similar add-ons are not included in the height calculation.

Vehicle combinations are classified based on axle count, gross vehicle weight (up to/over 3.5 t) and vehicle height.

Motorhomes are also classified according to axle count, gross vehicle weight and vehicle height.

Vehicle classes

  • Class 1A: Motorcycles, trikes and quads

  • Class 1: 2-axle vehicles up to 3.5 t and under 1.9 m height

  • Class 2: Vehicles over 1.9 m or vehicles with trailers

  • Class 3: Vehicles over 3.5 t or certain trailer combinations

  • Class 4: Vehicles with 4 or more axles over 3.5 t

Payment

Tolls are paid at toll stations. Drivers usually take a ticket when entering the motorway and pay when exiting the toll road.
