Who has to pay the special toll?

An additional fee must be paid for using special toll roads in Bulgaria. Although special toll roads are not subject to the vignette requirement or the distance-based toll, they are still subject to toll charges. This means that regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll, you must pay an additional amount for certain tunnels and mountain passes.

Accordingly, every vehicle owner must pay the special toll as soon as a special toll road is used. Please note that most special toll roads can only be reached via vignette-required access roads or distance-based toll access roads. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a vignette or an electronic on-board unit for the distance-based toll, regardless of the special toll road.

Which routes are subject to the special toll?

Special toll routes in Bulgaria include the Danube crossings. The Danube flows through Romania and Bulgaria and at the same time forms the border between the two countries. If you wish to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross the river, additional fees apply.
