Vehicle Classes Bulgaria

If you are planning to travel to Bulgaria, you must purchase a vignette or pay a distance-based toll in order to use the entire road network. We provide you with an overview of whether you only need to order a vignette for your vehicle or purchase an on-board device for the distance-based toll at local toll stations.

The different vehicle classes

There are different vehicle classes that fall under the vignette requirement. In general, vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW require a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 t GVW must pay a distance-based toll. However, there is one exception.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are the exception, as when traveling by motorcycle you neither need to present a vignette nor pay the distance-based toll.

Cars

If you are traveling to Bulgaria by car, you will need a vignette. The distance-based toll does not apply to you.

Cars with trailer

If you are traveling to Bulgaria with a car and a trailer, you will also need a vignette. As long as the combined weight of your car and trailer is under 3.5 t GVW, one vignette for the car is sufficient. If the combined weight exceeds 3.5 t GVW, you will need an additional vignette for the trailer. However, the distance-based toll still does not apply to you, even if the total weight exceeds 3.5 t GVW.

Motorhomes

If you are traveling to Bulgaria with a motorhome, you will need a vignette regardless of the weight of your motorhome. The distance-based toll does not apply to you even if the total weight exceeds 3.5 t GVW.

Trucks

Commercial vehicles over 3.5 t GVW must pay a distance-based toll. Due to the gross vehicle weight limit of 3.5 t GVW, this includes most trucks. The amount of toll to be paid varies depending on the vehicle, as it is based on the kilometers driven, the Euro emissions class, the number of axles, and the type of road. Payment is made either in advance via a route ticket (route pass/route plan) or via an electronic on-board unit (OBU) or a GPS tracker.

Attention: Special toll roads (route-based toll)

Please note that there are special toll roads in Bulgaria. Regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette or paid the distance-based toll, additional fees apply for using special toll roads. These include the Danube crossings between Bulgaria and Romania.
