Border
The border between Hungary and Serbia stretches for 151 km and is a river and land border in Southeast Europe. This means the border lies between southern Hungary and northern Serbia. The river that separates the two countries is the Tisza.
Border crossings
If you are travelling from Hungary to Serbia, the following border crossings will be particularly relevant for you. They can be reached via a motorway, European route or main road and therefore play a key role for travel traffic.
Röszke border crossing: This crossing is connected to Serbia via a motorway/European route. The European route E75 (and the Autópálya M5) from Budapest and Kecskemét passes Röszke and continues in Serbia as the A1 motorway. This motorway then runs via Horgoš and the capital Belgrade to North Macedonia.
Tompa border crossing: From Tompa, follow main road 53 to reach federal road 11 after the Serbian–Hungarian border, which continues towards Kelebija and Subotica. Subotica is known as the second-largest city in the province of Vojvodina and is therefore a popular place to stop. From there you can also access the A1 motorway.
Hercegszántó border crossing: This border town connects Budapest to Hercegszántó via main road 51. The drive between the two locations takes three hours. In Serbia, main road 51 then becomes federal road 15, which leads towards Bački Breg and then runs more or less across the country (including to Nova Crnja and the Romanian border).
Border controls
Please note that border controls take place more frequently at the border between Hungary and Serbia. These checks are stricter in part because this is an external EU border. Therefore, you should allow more time for your crossing. At the Röszke–Horgoš border, thorough checks often cause longer waiting times. In addition, the topic of migration remains very present for both Serbs and Hungarians. To prevent Serbian citizens from crossing into Europe, a border fence separates the two countries, in order to prevent Serbian citizens from crossing into Europe.
Hungary
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.
Hungary: Vignette requirement (or not?)
In Hungary, a vignette is required for cars, vehicle combinations and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW. This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), where toll compliance is checked electronically via the licence plate. You should purchase the e-vignette online before your trip, because if you drive on a toll road without an e-vignette, you may face fines.
Distance-based toll
You must pay a distance-based toll if your vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVW. This means motorhomes, buses and trucks have had to pay a distance-based electronic toll since January 2024, which is calculated via the HU-GO system (electronic toll collection). As a result, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette, so you no longer need one.

The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll road sections.
Vignette requirement (or not?)
In Serbia, there is no vignette requirement, but there is a distance-based toll system.
Distance-based toll
The distance-based toll is based on the distance travelled and can be paid at toll stations or using electronic systems. Expressways and motorways are therefore subject to tolls for all vehicles. The fee depends on the vehicle:
Passenger cars: depending on front axle height (below/above 1.3 m) or overall height (below/above 1.9 m)
Vehicle combinations: depending on front axle height (below/above 1.3 m) or overall height (below/above 1.9 m) and number of axles
Motorhomes: depending on front axle height (below/above 1.3 m), overall height (below/above 1.9 m), gross vehicle weight (below/above 3.5 t GVW) and number of axles
Payment can be made at the toll stations by taking a ticket and paying when you leave the motorway. Depending on the route and vehicle/vehicle class, the amount of toll due may be higher. At toll stations you can pay in cash as well as by credit card or bank card. Paying the distance-based toll is possible in euros. Please note, however, that any change will be returned in Serbian currency (dinar).
