Hortobàgy National Park: An Overview
Hortobàgy is also considered a microregion of the country and is known as the largest steppe in Central Europe. That is why the national park has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999. The park covers 82,000 hectares—an astonishing size that has made Hortobàgy National Park the largest contiguous nature reserve in Hungary. Here you have plenty of time to explore the different natural landscapes: saline meadows, pastures, loess steppes, floodplain forests, marshes, and lakes. But it’s not only these natural beauties that are fascinating—their inhabitants are, too. The national park offers many animal species excellent protection. Highlights of the National Park
If you would like to experience the romance of the steppes, immerse yourself in the former herdsmen’s way of life and explore the steppes by wagon or horseback. Of course, you can also get to know the surroundings better by bicycle. One thing is certain: in Hortobàgy, a varied program awaits you, offering interesting activities for everyone. Visit the visitor center to learn more about the park’s highlights and choose one of the excursions.
Particularly impressive is the sight of the water buffalo, which feel right at home on the vast open plains. You can also visit the Grey Cattle wagon or watch the impressive equestrian show. Just as exciting is the exclusive tour that takes you to the fishpond and lets you immerse yourself in nature. You can even get a bit of a safari feeling when you go by jeep in search of cranes. As mentioned, there is also the opportunity to learn about the local herdsmen and gain insights into their professional world.
If you are particularly interested in the national park’s animals, you should take the bus to the wildlife park in Hortobàgy-Malomàza. There you can discover herons, wild horses, wolves, vultures, wildcats, ferrets, and white-tailed eagles. Another special experience is the boat trip on the Hortobàgy River. During this trip you can get to know the impressive flora and fauna even better and see nature from a different perspective. At the same time, you travel into the past and learn about the tools and equipment used by fishermen back then.
A very special highlight is the stargazing walk in the national park’s wildlife park. It offers you a unique view of the night sky right in the middle of nature. You have surely never seen such a clear starry sky, far away from the bright lights of the cities. If you would like to take part in this program, you should check the current dates and times before traveling. Unfortunately, the stargazing walk only takes place on specific dates.
The Nine-Arch Bridge
During your visit, you should not miss the symbol of Hortobàgy. The famous 167-meter-long bridge is located on the edge of the village of Hortobàgy along Route 33. It has adorned the village since 1833 and replaced a former wooden bridge. However, the Nine-Arch Bridge is not only known for its appearance, but also for the legends surrounding it. According to stories, 400,000 locally fired bricks were used to build the bridge together with mortar made from sand and wine. When visiting this symbol of Hortobàgy, don’t miss the Shepherd Museum and the Hortobàgy Csárda, both located right next to the bridge. The Hortobàgy Csárda is an inn that not only tells you more about its history but also serves delicious food—an ideal place for a relaxing break, especially on its terrace. Recharged with new energy, you can then explore the Shepherd Museum perfectly.
Best Time to Visit
Hortobágy National Park does not reveal its charm only in one particular season. There are several travel periods that offer unique experiences and make your exploration tour unforgettable. In spring, the park’s beautiful nature blooms and the steppe turns lush green. You can also observe the return of the birds and accompany them during breeding season. Temperatures are pleasant and there are fewer tourists. Summer is also a great time to visit to experience the steppe in its well-known dry appearance. Many events take place during this season as well. However, keep in mind that it can become very hot, which may reduce enjoyment of longer tours. Just as wonderful as spring is autumn. This is when the crane migration takes place and nature appears in its familiar warm colors. Temperatures become pleasant again, making longer tours ideal—and you can admire the starry sky during a stargazing hike. In winter, things are generally quieter and the steppe may be partly covered in snow, meaning wildlife is less visible. The days are shorter, and there are fewer events and programs.
The spring and autumn months are therefore best suited. You should choose summer only if you can cope well with high temperatures. Nevertheless, you can theoretically visit the national park at any time of year and enjoy the charm of the steppes.
