Vehicle Classes Romania
If you are travelling to Romania, you must purchase a vignette in order to use the motorways without any worries. Distance-based tolls do not exist in Romania.
Do you need a vignette?
Most vehicles in Romania require a vignette. However, there is one exception. Below you will find an overview of the existing vehicle classes and the regulations that apply to your vehicle.
Motorcycles
As a motorcyclist, you do not need to purchase a vignette. You can use the entire road network in Romania without worrying about toll regulations. The only exception is special toll routes, for which all vehicles must pay a fee.
Passenger cars
If you are travelling to Romania with a passenger car, you need a digital vignette.
Passenger cars with trailer
If you are travelling to Romania with a passenger car and a trailer, you need only one digital vignette for the passenger car, regardless of the total weight, and not for the trailer.
Motorhomes
If you are travelling to Romania in a motorhome, you need a digital vignette, regardless of the weight of the motorhome.
Commercial vehicles
Commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 t require a digital vignette to use the road network. Unlike in other countries, Romania does not have a distance-based toll for vehicles over 3.5 t.
Vehicle classes subject to the vignette requirement
Below, the different vehicles are assigned to their respective vehicle classes. Depending on the vehicle class, the price of the digital vignette also varies:
Category A: passenger cars, passenger cars with trailer, and motorhomes
Category B: commercial vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
Category C: commercial vehicles over 3.5 t up to 7.5 t gross vehicle weight
Category D: commercial vehicles (2 axles) over 7.5 t up to 12 t gross vehicle weight
Category E: commercial vehicles from 12 t gross vehicle weight (2–3 axles)
Category F: commercial vehicles from 12 t gross vehicle weight (4 axles)
Category G: passenger cars with 9 to 23 seats (including the driver’s seat)
Category H: passenger cars with more than 23 seats (including the driver’s seat)
Attention: special toll routes (route-based toll)
Please note that special toll routes exist in Romania. Regardless of whether you have already purchased a vignette, additional fees apply for using special toll routes. Special toll routes include Danube crossings between Romania and Bulgaria.
