For a wonderful three weeks, I travelled by car to Slovenia. And I have to say: This little gem of Europe really won me over. Mountains, sea, lakes, wine-growing regions and picturesque towns: what a beautiful and diverse country! In the following itinerary, I'll tell you about my road trip and share what you absolutely shouldn't miss in Slovenia!
I set off directly from Germany by car on my way to Slovenia. Before leaving, I had packed everything I needed for the trip: the usual holiday essentials plus some camping equipment. Every now and then, I wanted to pitch my tent out in nature. Once everything was stowed in the boot, I was ready to go!
My drive first took me through Austria and then through the Karawanken Tunnel (special toll section), on the other side of which Slovenia — the small country on the edge of the Alps — was already waiting for me. Fortunately, I left home early, as the journey from southern Germany took around eight hours. Depending on where you start, it may therefore be worth making an overnight stop halfway along the route.
Also very important: don't forget your vignettes under any circumstances! They are required in both Austria and Slovenia (even if you are just passing through) and are country-specific. On my trip back then, I exited the motorway for both vignettes and picked them up at a service station. Today, however, I recommend simply buying the vignettes digitally in advance: it's much more convenient and saves you precious time on what is already a long drive.
After that, there's nothing else to worry about and you can tour through Slovenia carefree. Simple as that! Oh, and while we're on the subject: the Karawanken Tunnel, which connects Austria with Slovenia, also charges a small special toll. So ideally have a little cash ready for that!
From the border, it then took about another hour until I arrived at my first stop: Ljubljana, the beautiful capital of the country. All that was left was to find a parking spot, and then the last challenge of the first day of travel was overcome. And sure enough, I actually found a free spot right next to the large market square, just beside the old town. From there, my accommodation wasn't far either.
