Travel Report: Road Trip Through Slovenia 1
For a wonderful three weeks, I set off by car to Slovenia. And I have to say: this little jewel of Europe really won me over. Mountains, sea, lakes, wine-growing regions, and picturesque towns: what a beautiful and diverse country! In the following series, I'll tell you about my road trip and reveal what you absolutely shouldn't miss in Slovenia!
From Germany to Slovenia
I set off from Germany straight away by car to Slovenia. Beforehand, I had packed everything I needed for the trip: the usual vacation essentials, plus some camping equipment. Every now and then, I wanted to pitch my tent out in nature. Once everything was stowed in the trunk, I could finally get going!
My drive first took me through Austria and then through the Karawanks Tunnel (special toll route), on the other side of which Slovenia, the small country on the edge of the Alps, was already waiting for me. Fortunately, I left home early, as it took me about eight hours from southern Germany. Depending on where you start, it might therefore be worth making an overnight stop halfway through the journey.
First things first: don't forget the vignettes!
Also very important: don't forget the vignettes under any circumstances! You need one in both Austria and Slovenia (even if you're just passing through), and it's country-specific. Back on my trip, I pulled off the highway for both vignettes and picked up the good pieces at a rest stop. Today, however, I recommend simply buying the vignettes digitally in advance: it's much more convenient and saves you precious time on the already long drive.
After that, you don't have to worry about anything else and can tour through Slovenia carefree. Simple as that! Oh, and while we're at it: there's also a small special toll for the Karawanks Tunnel, which connects Austria and Slovenia. So it's best to have a bit of cash ready for that!
From the border, it then took about another hour until I reached my first stop: Ljubljana, the country's beautiful capital. Now all that was left was to find a parking spot, and the last challenge of the first day of travel would be mastered. And lo and behold, I actually found a free spot right near the large marketplace, right next to the old town. From there, it wasn't far to my accommodation either.
