Toll in Poland

Last updated: 14.07.2026 Reading time: 10 Minute(s)

What is a toll (obligation)?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. Fees are levied for the use of many motorways, expressways, tunnels and bridges. The revenue goes, among other things, towards the expansion and maintenance of the road network as well as road safety measures.

  • Infrastructure: Construction and maintenance of roads and motorways

  • Road safety and traffic management: intelligent transport systems

  • Environmental protection: measures to reduce noise and emissions

How is the toll charged?

In principle, a toll can be charged as a vignette, a distance-based toll or as a special toll. In Poland, there is no classic vignette requirement. Instead, a distance-based toll applies on certain motorway sections. Accordingly, privately financed concession motorways are subject to tolls for all motor vehicles, while vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW may travel toll-free on publicly financed motorways. It follows that: all vehicles over 3.5 t are subject to tolls on all motorways (privately and publicly financed). If you would like to find out more about concession motorways, please visit our guide.

Distance-based toll (up to 3.5 t GVW)

For vehicles up to 3.5 t (e.g. cars and motorcycles), tolls generally only apply on privately operated motorway sections. Payment is made depending on the route at toll stations (cash or credit card) or electronically.

Vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW

  • A1 Gdańsk–Toruń: toll required

  • A2 Świecko–Konin: toll required

  • A2 Konin–Stryków: toll-free

  • A4 Katowice–Kraków: toll required

  • A4 Bielany Wrocławskie–Sośnica: toll-free

Distance-based toll (over 3.5 t GVW)

Vehicles over 3.5 t are subject to tolls in Poland on all motorways, expressways and many national roads. Payment is made either on a distance basis or electronically via the e-TOLL system. Further information on the e-TOLL system can be found in our guide.

Vehicles over 3.5 t GVW

  • A1 Gdańsk–Toruń: toll required

  • A2 Świecko–Konin: toll required

  • A2 Konin–Stryków: toll required

  • A4 Katowice–Kraków: toll required

  • A4 Bielany Wrocławskie–Sośnica: toll required

Regulations

Motorcycles with trailers as well as combinations with twin tyres or double axles are classified at a higher rate on privately financed motorways. Combinations and motorhomes over 3.5 t must use the electronic e-TOLL system on public roads without exception.
