What is the Great St. Bernard Tunnel?

The Great St. Bernard Tunnel is located in the southern canton of Valais in Switzerland and connects the Swiss town of Martigny via main road 21 with the Italian state road SS27, which leads to the Italian city of Aosta. Construction of the tunnel began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. It was officially opened to road traffic on March 19, 1964.

On the day of the opening, around 1,200 vehicles used the tunnel. In 2013, a total of about 620,000 vehicles were counted, corresponding to a daily average of around 1,699 vehicles. The tunnel is operated by SISEX SA, a company in which both TGSB and SITRASB hold shares. Due to the binational ownership structure, it was decided in 2006 to levy the toll fees without VAT or comparable charges.

Is the Great St. Bernard Tunnel subject to a special toll?

The Great St. Bernard Tunnel is a route subject to a special toll and is therefore subject to the special toll charge. In addition to the vignette requirement or the heavy vehicle charge, a separate fee must therefore be paid to use the tunnel. You can find more information on the special toll in our guide.

• Category A2: Vehicles with two or more axles, front axle height below 1.30 m, and a total height of up to 2 m

• Category B1: Vehicles with two or more axles and a total height between over 2 m and a maximum of 3 m
