Toll Guide

Tolls in Europe – how differently they work

Whether you pay for a road depends on which country you're traveling in. In Europe, there are three fundamentally different systems for this – and almost every country relies on its own combination of them.

Vignette

A flat fee for a fixed period (e.g. 10 days, 1 year). It allows you to use all toll-vignette-required roads in the country – regardless of the distance driven.

Distance-based toll

The fee is based on the kilometers driven, usually recorded via a box/vignette in the vehicle (e.g., GO-Box, toll sticker) or a toll station.

Special toll

An additional fee for individual routes, tunnels, or passes – often charged in addition to the vignette or distance-based toll.

Which of these systems apply in which country and what exactly you pay differs from country to country. Select your destination country below to go directly to the appropriate toll information page.

Example

Toll in practice:
two countries, two systems

Two neighboring countries, two completely different systems: in Austria, you stick a vignette on your windshield, while in Italy, you take a ticket at the toll booth and pay according to the distance driven. That's why it's worth informing yourself about each country before your trip.

Austria

For vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you use a vignette in Austria: a flat fee for a fixed period, which you stick to the windshield. In addition, there is also the route-based toll and special toll.

Italy

Regardless of vehicle weight, you pay the distance-based toll in Italy: You take a ticket when entering and pay according to the distance driven when exiting. At some tunnels and passes, an additional special toll applies.
