Tolls in Europe – how differently they work

Whether you pay for a road depends on the country you are driving in. Europe uses three fundamentally different systems – and almost every country relies on its own combination of them.

Vignette

A flat fee for a fixed period (e.g. 10 days, 1 year). It lets you use all vignette roads in the country – regardless of the distance you drive.

Distance-based toll

The fee depends on the kilometres driven, usually recorded by an on-board unit (e.g. GO-Box, toll sticker) or at a toll station.

Special toll

An extra charge for individual routes, tunnels or passes – often on top of the vignette or distance-based toll.

Tolls in practice:
two countries, two systems

Two neighbouring countries, two completely different systems: in Austria you stick a vignette to the windscreen, in Italy you take a ticket at the toll plaza and pay by distance. That is why it pays to read up on each country before you travel.

For vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW you use a vignette in Austria: a flat fee for a fixed period, stuck to the windscreen. On top of that there is also the distance-based toll and the special toll.

Regardless of vehicle weight, in Italy you pay a distance-based toll: you take a ticket when entering and pay for the distance driven when leaving. Some tunnels and passes charge an additional special toll.
